The Homeric Record — Woke Odyssey

The Homeric Declaration

We, the undersigned, place our names upon this record in defense of Homer’s Odyssey and the Western inheritance¹ it helped shape across nearly three thousand years.

We reject the rewriting of timeless stories to serve the woke agenda² and the political divisions of our age. Adaptation may reinterpret Homer, but it should not reshape his characters, world, and legacy through contemporary political priorities while trading upon Homer’s name and cultural authority.

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey³ has become, for us, a symbol of that divide.

Our objection is not to imagination, artistic freedom, or reinterpretation. It is to the belief that the past must continually be rewritten in the image of the politics of the present.

Homer belongs to no filmmaker, studio, or political moment.

And so we leave our names here as testimony:

We saw what was changed.

We remembered what came before.

We did not call the two the same.

1 Western Inheritance By Western inheritance, we mean the literary and cultural tradition through which Homer’s works have been read, translated, taught, imitated, debated, and reimagined for centuries. The Odyssey stands near the beginning of that tradition and became an enduring reference point in European and wider Western literature, art, education, and thought. ↩

2 Woke Agenda In this Record, “woke agenda” refers to a far-left political and cultural ideology that interprets society, history, and culture primarily through questions of identity, race, gender, sexuality, representation, power, privilege, and historical grievance, particularly when these priorities are used to rework inherited stories and their characters, relationships, world, or historical context to conform to present-day political expectations. ↩

3 Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey The changes are already visible in choices of casting, characterization, visual representation, and the reconstruction of Homer’s world, raising questions about the relationship between this adaptation and the work whose name it carries.

By choosing to call his film The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan claims the cultural weight of Homer’s name while departing from the work that gave that name its authority, making direct comparison not merely legitimate, but unavoidable. ↩
